Module: Speed and Direction
DCI: PS2.A (B) Forces and Motion – Pushing or pulling on an object
can change the speed or direction of its motion and can start or stop it.
DCI: PS2.B types of Interactions –When objects touch or collide,
they push on one another and can change motion.
DCI: PS2.C Relationship Between Energy and Forces – A bigger push
or pull makes things to faster.
PE: K-PS2-1 Plan and Conduct an investigation to compare the
effects of different strengths or different directions of pushes and pulls on
the motion of an object.
PE: K-PS2-2 Analyze data to determine if a design solution works as
intended to change the speed or direction of an object with a push or a pull.
There is some basic content we think is reasonable for kids to know at this age.
-Pushing or pulling on an object can -
-make it move, if it is not moving
-stop it, if it is moving
-change the speed or direction of an object already in motion
-Things can push or pull on each other when they collide.
-Bigger pushes make things go faster.
In addition to the content, the little kids should be playing with stuff that moves and watching what it does. They should recognize...
-what they would have to do to see how a push or pull affects movement
-how they can make stuff move
-how they can vary the pushes and pulls
-what they need to look at to see the effects
-what conclusions to draw from the data
