Module: Energy from the Sun
DCI: PS3.B Conservation of Energy and Energy Transfer – Sunlight
warms Earth’s surface.
PE: K-PS3-1 Make observations to determine the effect of sunlight
on Earth’s surface.
PE: K-PS3-2 Use tools and materials to design and build a structure
that will reduce the warming effect of sunlight on an area.
So we are expecting just the minimum from the Kindergartners in terms of the Sun.
-The sun makes things warm.
-There are probably a limited number of "effects" we can expect these to recognize. I would imagine these would be about heat and water.
-As far as engineering, we should expect kids to make something that makes shade.(?)
POSSIBLE QUESTION STARTERS:
-What makes [outside] warm?
-What does the sun do? (We must be careful to limit this to things young kids understand but we can't have, as a wrong answer, something like "wind blowing" and figure these kids don't know it.
- Ice is put under two cups in the Sun. We want to see which cup stopped more sunlight. What do we look at?
