MS - LS1 Anatomy of a Cell - FINAL (WND 12-9-13)

Module: Anatomy of a Cell
DCI: LS1.A (B) Within cells, special structures are responsible for particular functions, and the cell membrane forms the boundary that controls what enters and leaves the cell.

PE: MS-LS1-2 Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function.

[Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on the cell functioning as a whole system and the primary role of identified parts of the cell, specifically the nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondria, cell membrane, and cell wall.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment of organelle structure/function relationships is limited to the cell wall and cell membrane. Assessment of the function of the other organelles is limited to their relationship to the whole cell. Assessment does not include the biochemical function of cells or cell parts.]

Working through the life science standards for all levels of NGSS, we are noticing a continued emphasis on specialization of cells as related to life sustaining functions.

Related to this standard, here are a few ideas -

-General questions about the fact that functions within the cell are completed by specialized cell parts are fair game.

-We can only ask about the parts of the cell which are specifically mentioned in the clarification statement which does not include golgi bodies, ER, lysosomes, etc.

-Asking about structure of individual cell parts is only acceptable for the cell wall and cell membrane, not for other parts.

- We can ask about the other parts mentioned (nucleus, chloroplasts and mitochondria), so long as we relate their function to the "overall cell."

-An emphasis should be placed on a conceptual model (not, necessarily, a physical representation).

Possible Question Starters:
"The structure of the cell membrane contributes to its overall function by -"
correct answer = allowing select materials to enter and exit the cell.
wrong answer = providing a rigid support structure for the cell.

"A cell's ability to utilize energy would be affected most by which of the following changes made to its internal structure?"
