1 - LS1 - Parts of animals - FINAL (CJT 2/13/2014)

Module: Parts of Animals
DCI: LS1.A (A) Structure and Function – All organisms have external parts. Different animals use their body parts in different ways to see, hear, grasp objects, protect themselves, move from place to place, and seek, find, and take in food, water and air.

PE: 1-LS1-1 Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.

[Clarification Statement: Examples of human problems that can be solved by mimicking plant or animal solutions could include designing clothing or equipment to protect bicyclists by mimicking turtle shells, acorn shells, and animal scales; stabilizing structures by mimicking animal tails and roots on plants; keeping out intruders by mimicking thorns on branches and animal quills; and, detecting intruders by mimicking eyes and ears.]

The basic content of the standard seems to be as follows.

- All organisms (animals) have external parts.

- Animals use their (external) parts to see, hear, get around, find food, eat food, drink water, get air (?) and protect themselves.

The PE suggests that we should see if kids can recognize how some things that humans build work like animal parts.

Possible Questions:

We can probably get away with a couple of questions about animal parts.

Animals have parts like ears, wings and -
teeth

To move from place to place, a [animal] has -
legs?

The other questions should be about human devices that mimic animal parts.
