DCI: LS1.D (B) Information Processing – Plants also respond to some
external inputs.
PE: 1-LS1-1 Use materials
to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals
use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs
[Clarification
Statement: Examples of human problems that can be solved by mimicking plant or
animal solutions could include designing clothing or equipment to protect
bicyclists by mimicking turtle shells, acorn shells, and animal scales;
stabilizing structures by mimicking animal tails and roots on plants; keeping
out intruders by mimicking thorns on branches and animal quills; and, detecting
intruders by mimicking eyes and ears.]
The basic content of this standard seems to be as follows.
- Plants respond to external stimuli (light, gravity? water?)
The PE implies that kids are looking at human designs that mimic plant parts, but we have already covered the parts like roots and leaves and stems in the "Parts of plants" module, so it seems we have to stick, here, to design solutions that mimic how plants respond.
Possible Questions:
We may have to stretch to three the basic DCI content questions.
1 - a question about how and why plants "do" phototropism
2 - a question about how and why plants "do" geotropism
3 - a question about how and why plants "do" hydrotropism
The other two questions need to somehow focus on something humans build that works in the way that a plant works when it is responding to its environment.
