MS - LS2.B - Matter and Energy in Food Webs - FINAL (WND 2/5/2014)

Module: Matter and Energy in Food Webs
DCI: LS2.B (0) Food webs are models that demonstrate how matter and energy is transferred between producers, consumers, and decomposers as the three groups interact within an ecosystem. Transfers of matter into and out of the physical environment occur at every level. Decomposers recycle nutrients from dead plant or animal matter back to the soil in terrestrial environments or to the water in aquatic environments. The atoms that make up the organisms in an ecosystem are cycled repeatedly between the living and nonliving parts of the ecosystem.
Connections to Nature of Science: Scientific Knowledge Assumes an Order and Consistency in Natural System: Science assumes that objects and events in natural systems occur in consistent patterns that are understandable through measurement and observation.

PE: MS-LS2-3 Develop a model to describe the cycling of matter and flow of energy among living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem.

[Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on describing the conservation of matter and flow of energy into and out of various ecosystems, and on defining the boundaries of the system.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include the use of chemical reactions to describe the processes.]

The ideas in this standard are:
- food webs are models that demonstrate how matter and energy is transferred between producers, consumers, and decomposers
- Transfer of matter into and out of the physical environment occurs at every level
- Decomposers recycle nutrients from dead plant or animal matter back into the soil or water
- The atoms that make up organisms in an ecosystem are cycled between the living and nonliving parts of the ecosystem

This PE has them developing a model, which, we've seen in the past can be completing a diagram, coming up with a conceptual model, etc.  The idea is that both matter and energy are cycled between the living and non-living parts of the environment.  Because the standard specifically mentions producers,  consumers, and decomposers, it is safe to have kids identify their functions, or to identify which organisms are completing which role.

Possible Question Starters:
"Matter is passed from a non-living part of an ecosystem to a living part of the ecosystem when which of the following takes place?"

- Animals drink water
- Plants give off gases
