4 - LS1.A - Plant and Animal Parts - FINAL (WND 1/17/2014)

DCI: LS1.A Structure and Function – Plants and animals have both internal and external structures that serve various functions in growth, survival, behavior, and reproduction.

PE: 4-LS1-1 Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.

[Clarification Statement: Examples of structures could include thorns, stems, roots, colored petals, heart, stomach, lung, brain, and skin.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment is limited to macroscopic structures within plant and animal systems.]

The ideas we see in this standard are:
- plants have internal structures that serve various functions in growth, survival, behavior, and reproduction
- plants have external structures that serve various functions in growth, survival, behavior, and reproduction (thorns, stems, roots, colored petals)
- animals have internal structures that serve various functions in growth, survival, behavior, and reproduction (heart, lunch, stomach, brain)
- animals have external structures that serve various functions in growth, survival, behavior, and reproduction (skin)

Possible Question Starters:
"Plants are able to produce their own food because - "
correct answer - they have special structures that allow them to do so.
incorrect answer - they start out as small seeds and grow into adult plants.

"Gazelles with short legs are attacked by predators more often than gazelles with longer legs.  This is evidence that -
correct answer - longer legs help the gazelles escape predators and survive.
incorrect answer - predators prefer the meat in shorter legged gazelles.
