Module: Atomic Structure and Bonding
DCI: PS1.A (A) Each atom has a charged substructure consisting of a
nucleus, which is made of protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons.
PE: HS-PS1-1 Use the
periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based
on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms.
No Clarification Statements:
The basic content of the standard seems to be as follows.
- Atoms have substructures.
- Atoms have a nucleus, consisting of protons and neutrons, and electrons surrounding the nucleus.
- There seems to be nothing in the standard about the charges or lack of charge on any of the sub-atomic particles.
- Most of the questions should focus on having kids predict the properties of elements based on their positions on the PTE, specifically in relation to the number of electrons in the outer shell.
