Module: Transfer of Energy in Collision
DCI: PS3.B (A) Conservations of Energy and Energy Transfer – Energy
is present whenever there are moving objects, sounds, light, or heat. When
objects collide, energy can be transferred from one object to another, thereby
changing their motion. In such collisions, some energy is typically also
transferred to the surrounding air; as a result the air gets heated and sound
is produced.
PE: 4-PS3-2 Make observations to provide evidence that energy can
be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric
currents.
PE: 4-PS3-3 Ask questions and predict outcomes about the changes in
energy that occur when objects collide.
No Clarification Statements
The basic content is as follows.
Energy is present whenever there are objects moving.
Energy is present whenever there are sounds.
Energy is present whenever there is light.
Energy is present whenever there is heat.
Colliding objects transfer energy from one object to the other, changing the motion of one object, the other or both.
During a collision, some energy will heat the air and a sound is often produced.
More important than the content above is the students ability to make observations that provide evidence for these ideas.
The students should also be able to predict outcomes of energy transfer
