K - ESS2 - Reducing human impact - FINAL (CJT 1-10-14)

Module: Reducing Human Impact
DCI: ESS2.C (B) Human Impacts on Earth Systems – Humans can make choices that reduce their impacts on the land, water, air, and other living things.
DCI: ESS3.C Human Impacts on Earth Systems – Things that people do to live comfortably can affect the world around them. But they can make choices that reduce their impacts on the land, water, air, and other living things.
DCI: ESS1.B Developing Possible Solutions – Designs can be conveyed through sketches, drawings, or physical models. These representations are useful in communicating ideas for a problem’s solutions to other people.
PE: K-ESS2-2 Construct an argument supported by evidence for how plants and animals (including humans) can change the environment to meet their needs.

PE: K-ESS3-3 Communication solutions that will reduce the impact of humans on the land, water, air, and/or other living things in the local environment.

No Clarification Statements

The content for which kindergartners are responsible seems to be as follows.

- Humans can choose to do things or not do things that will change the impact on land, water, air, plants and animals

- Things that humans do to "live comfortably" has an impact on the environment. (I assume that this "live comfortably" is here because much of what humans do is not always necessary for their survival, e.g. driving cars, heating and cooling their homes, etc.)

What kids need to be able to do is...

- use sketches to convey ideas (about human choices and environmental impact?)
- construct arguments using evidence about how plants, animals and humans affect the environment
- communicate ideas about changes that will reduce human impact on land, water, air, plants and animals
