Module: Environmental Traits
DCI: LS3.A (B) Inheritance of Traits – Other characteristics result
from individuals’ interactions with the environment, which can range from diet
to learning. Many characteristics involve both inheritance and environment.
DCI: LS3.B (B) Variation of Traits – The environment also affects
the traits that an organism develops.
PE: 3-LS3-2 Use evidence to support the explanation that traits can
be influenced by the environment.
Clarification
Statement: Examples of the environment affecting a trait could include normally
tall plants grown with insufficient water are stunted; and, a pet dog that is
given too much food and little exercise may become overweight.]
So this is the second half of the standard on inheritance of traits for third grade. The other half of the standard was simply about traits that can be inherited, while this one is more about those that are affected by the environment.
Here are the main ideas:
- some characteristics result from individuals' interactions with the environment (diet, learning)
- many characteristics are a result of both inheritance and the environment
- the environment affects traits that an organism develops
